Three Types of Academic Essays

An essay is, as the name suggests an essay that is written to give the author’s argument However, the exact definition is a bit hazy, encompassing all those of a letter, an essay or a newspaper article, pamphlets and even a short story. The style of writing essays can determine whether they are informal or formal. This means that an essay written in a formal format will be written in a structured manner, using correct syntax and sentence structure. However, an informal essay could utilize simple language and poor grammar. However, there are certain formal types of essays which are frequently used even by people who consider themselves to be not the most skilled writers.

The argument essay, also known by the argumentative essay, is perhaps the most popular type of essay. These essays are typically written in the form of arguments. They support one side of a debate and use literary devices such as metaphors and similes to gain an advantage. There is often an intense sense of polemics, and the debate may almost always be distinguished from personal opinions or feeling toward a particular subject. To be used in college classes, essays need to meet certain requirements set forth by the department of education or under the supervision and guidance of a certified instructor.

Another kind of essay is the descriptive essay. Also known as the narrative essay. This type of essay is not an exhaustive outline of a subject. Instead it will present information quickly from various sources in a succinct and concise manner. It uses the language of storytelling, presenting the central character, event, or idea in a story form. Many colleges and universities require detailed descriptions of the information and figures involved in the topic and an end-of-course report that discusses the subject’s strengths and weaknesses and the purposeful application of the facts gathered.

Argumentative essays are the third most sought-after type of essay. It tends to be more complicated than the descriptive essay. Arguments are presented to support of some central thesis and are usually written in response to other people’s arguments. Students should be attentive to arguments from both the proponents and the opponents in their essay. This will enable them to use their knowledge of the subject to determine “What do you think is the proof?” Solid reasoning is required.

The fourth and most frequent type of writing is the comparative essay. Comparative essays compare objects or sets of objects and examine the ways they differ. They require thorough investigation to determine which information and figures are pertinent to the argument they write my paper for me are supporting. An important element of every comparative essay is the conclusion, which summarizes the findings of the study.

Other types of essays that are required for college credit include descriptive and argumentative. Argumentative essays require that the author simply present a position typically based on personal experiences or a study of science and rely on personal experience or supposed scientific evidence to back the argument. Descriptive essays are comparable to argumentative essays but they are narrative or descriptive of things that were observed or felt. Both types of academic essays–arguments and descriptions–contend about the subject of the essays, and the aim is to persuade the reader that the conclusion they draw is correct. Sometimes an academic writer may choose to write an argument and a description, which may be the topic of separate essays.

The writing process requires the author to take a number of different approaches to the written work. They should not just contain the main ideas, but should also contain additional information to back them. After completing an essay, the student must be able to explain the arguments behind their opinions with additional information that is valid, but should make sure to make the reader feel that their own opinion was the most appropriate.

Students should avoid the mistake of focusing too much on the expression of their thoughts, as this can often lead to oversimplification–a common problem among students who attempt to write persuasive essays. Instead, students should try to provide a thorough explanation of their opinions, supported by valid research. Although a descriptive essay is not as compelling as an argumentative essay it will be more engaging for the reader.
